Promise
“I promise, from now until forever, to share everything I have. What’s mine is yours.”
Niall forces his red shovel into the sand, unearthing a load of tiny grains and carefully transferring them to the blue bucket resting next to him. He peers into the bucket and figures one more scoop should do it, so he returns his attention to the sandbox. The next shovelful is dumped in with the first and four year old Niall smiles in satisfaction, ditching the shovel so he can grip the bucket with both hands. It’s barely full, only about five scoops of sand swirling around the bottom, but it’s all the tiny boy can lift. He does that now, lifting the bucket until it is over his head. Then, with a shout of glee, he empties its contents onto his head. He shrieks happily, squeezing his eyes shut and giggling madly as the sandy grains cling to his rich brown hair. He knows Mum will scold him later and the sand will begin to itch, but right now, he’s thrilled. He loves going to the park.
